A Guide to Ironmongery for Steel Doors

A steel door can provide enhanced safety and security for buildings and their occupants. A sturdy construction makes it more resistant to forced entry and damage, offering higher levels of protection. Choosing the right ironmongery for a steel door is not only fundamental to the door's performance, but it is also essential for the safety and security of the door. From door closers for non-insulated steel fire doors to continuous hinges and bespoke adjustment plates, HOPPE (UK) has been supplying tailored solutions and offering advice on non-standard products to steel door manufacturers for many years.

What is a continuous hinge?

A continuous hinge is a single, extended unit designed to cover the entire length of a door. These durable hinges are surface mounted, which makes them easy to cut down to size.

Where are continuous hinges used?

Continuous hinges are often used on steel doors in high-traffic areas or high-abuse areas for example in warehouses, or on entrance doors to shops, and oversized doors. These robust hinges are ideal for supporting heavier doors, offering a superior alternative to standard hinges.

A continuous hinge offers significant security advantages, as the hinge pin runs the full height of the door, making it extremely difficult to remove. Cutting the hinge off is not a simple option either. This makes them a popular choice for banks and other high-security buildings.

Choosing the Right Door Closer for a Steel Door

Building regulations determine whether steel doors should be insulated or non-insulated, depending on the building's intended use. In the UK, many steel doors are non-insulated. The lack of insulation and the increased rate of heat transfer during fire conditions raise significant safety concerns compared to timber or insulated steel fire doors. Therefore, it is crucial to install a door closer that can withstand extremely high temperatures.

Door Closers for a Non-Insulated Steel Door

The intense levels of heat that the non-fire side of a non-insulated steel fire door can reach while containing a fire leads to increased pressure within the door closer that could compromise its integrity and cause the oil to escape. If the oil comes into contact with the door, which will be extremely hot, it is likely to ignite. If the door closer is to the non-fire side when the oil combusts, this increases the risk of the fire spreading throughout the building.

The ARRONE AR550SD and AR9500SD Door Closing Device

The AR550SD and AR9500SD door closers for non-insulated doors are made with non-flammable fluid, with a chemical composition that provides consistent function and fire performance.

Both door closers have been included in successful fire tests on both sides of a non-insulated steel fire door and have achieved compliance with BS EN1634 Part 1. Both products are CE marked to the requirements of BS EN1154 in accordance with current legislation, making them suitable for use on non-insulated steel fire doors for up to 240 minutes.

Adjustable Frame Fixing Foot and Plate

Often used in steel door applications, an adjustable frame fixing foot and plate provide tolerance between the door frame cut-out and the steel door frame. The threaded fixing foot allows for precise adjustments, ensuring a more accurate and secure fitting by being wound out as needed.
